When you throw open the doors to your forever home for the first time, you also open the door to the possibility of a massive redesign. For one couple, that possibility quickly evolved into reality when they set eyes on the one: a sprawling ranch house in Englewood, New Jersey. The space was dripping with potential, but reaching it required chipping through a remarkably outdated 1960s design. To help transport their new dream digs to the 21st century, the couple hired designer Homepolish.
“The [couple’s] inspirational photos all resembled a bright space, with clean, modern lines,” Natalie recalls. “They wanted to bring in the colors they loved, while keeping the space timeless and neutral.”
They landed on a black-and-white palette with pops of color, splashes of luxurious metals, and texture aplenty. And while the couple initially planned to dodge a major overhaul, the project quickly evolved into a full-fledged renovation, starting with the center of the home.
“We went back and forth on the updates that would be made in the kitchen, but in the end, the clients decided that they wanted the kitchen to be the heart of the home, so we gutted the entire space and placed the majority of the scope and direction there,” Natalie explains.
She reconfigured the layout to satiate the couple’s desire for an open, entertainment-worthy space. For the palette, Natalie leaned heavily on white, punctuated with greens and nudes—the perfect complement to the room’s indisputable star features: a custom brass hood hovering above the stove and the sprawling waterfall island made of a single slab of quartz.
Another significant transformation occurred in the bathroom. Originally a dungeon-like space, Natalie coated the all-black walls in bright white paint and brought in natural materials, like wooden shelving, to amplify the light and airy feel. She also opted for a hexagon tile floor and a custom-made concrete countertop to lend the space some visual interest. She then extended this elevated vibe in the living room and dining room.
“[My clients] are such warm and welcoming people who love to kick back, but also love to entertain,” she reveals. “So we created a more luxe space for parties and entertaining.”
The blush-toned living room, punctuated with brass and gold accents, beautifully blends new and old-school glamour, as well as high and low finds—think a stunning rug you’ll hardly believe is from Homegoods, alongside decorative mirrors from ABC Home.
The more relaxed family room, on the other hand, is a sun-drenched retreat with a modern aprés ski feel, complete with an antler chandelier and faux fur ottomans. For a modern, bespoke touch, Natalie added custom built-ins, refaced the fireplace in honed quartz, and added striking wrought iron doors that reflect her clients’ sophisticated tastes. Because when you throw open the doors to your forever home, they should lead to a room that screams you.
