When my boyfriend, Brian, and I set out to find an apartment together it proved to be a daunting task. We were looking to rent in the high-demand Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. (Just take a look at some of our recent LA projects… they all seem to be in Silver Lake, like this full reno and this rental project.) We also had a specific list of must-haves. After six months and no luck of finding anything in our price range, we looked at this charming 1920s duplex. The building had great architectural details but some really outdated elements as well. I decided to pitch some small improvements to our landlords, and they luckily agreed. These changes made a huge impact on the space but didn’t break the bank. With little investment we created a rental that feels like a home that we plan on living in for many years.
Living in Southern California definitely influences me as a designer. I love bringing the outdoors in by incorporating natural elements. I don’t shy away from using bold colors or patterns. Brian and I both love flea market shopping for pieces together and crafting our own DIYs, but I also try to incorporate modern pieces in our space so it still feels fresh. Living in a home that feels collected yet still modern is very important to us.

This is our first space together as a couple, so we wanted to make it extra special. Not to mention, being that we are both creative professionals, having an inspired home is important to us and our work.- Merisa L., Homepolish designer
