Following social media maven and beauty expert Deepica Mutyala, her life seems absolutely fabulous. But her studio apartment in Hell's Kitchen was a chaotic mess of photo equipment and boxes. Homepolish's Amy Row (who is fabulous in her own right) shows us how she made the space ab fab.

Meeting the glamorous beauty expert and social media pro Deepica Mutyala, I would have thought that she would have the glam apartment to match. As it turns out, however, it wasn’t until she had an apartment fire that she decided to turn lemons into lemonade. Calling up Homepolish, she wanted to finally make a home out of her cramped studio space. I came in to create a bright, fresh apartment that would really reflect Deepica’s bold, fun personality. Your home can be the truest representation of yourself, and I wanted to integrate that philosophy into Deepica’s space so that she really, truly felt at ease once the design was complete. We started with almost nothing, so this was a full transformation. I approached the space with a “less is more” mentality and every piece that was purchased was not only functional but also beautiful, or had a story that added special character to her home. By selecting each piece with intention, the space is richer and feels genuine. When you surround yourself with beautiful, meaningful objects, you create a level of authenticity that allows you to be more connected to the space.

I had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with ABC Carpet and Home on this project. ABC is my favorite home shop in New York, and I was thrilled to get to work with them and spend a lot of time in their store, getting inspiration and hand-selecting the pieces that best fit Deepica’s space. The company’s design philosophy is very much in tune with my own. They believe that your home should be a sanctuary, and their furniture pieces are all made ethically by incredible artists.

Deepica told me how important it was that we find a way to separate her filming and work space from the rest of the apartment. This is where crafting a layout that maximized the limited square feet was key. By creating an alcove for the office to the side of the bed, tucked away from the living room, Deepica can now step away from her work, enter her living room, and get cozy. She can even entertain friends, without having photo equipment getting in the way.

Working with a small studio space was a challenge but a gratifying one in the end. It’s always worth it to see the relief and sense of peace on the client’s face. Especially in a concrete jungle like New York, a sanctuary to call home is so important, and it brings me great happiness to be able to have a positive impact on people’s lives in this way. To my delight, my girl Deepica finally feels like she’s at home. Even if it’s just to grab a little shut-eye in between her hectic schedule.

Amy has the most elevated style of anyone I’ve ever met. She pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and made me realize the value of less is more. Everything in my home now is something I will carry and take with me into future apartments. I realize now that just because I rent my place doesn’t mean it’s not my home and it’s important to make it feel that way.
