A Family Home Set in the New Jersey Woods

Flora and Brian Kelly, and their two kids

With a growing family, the Kellys decided to take on a renovation and expansion of their Glen Rock home. Homepolish's Natalie Chianese was brought on to lend her expertise to the interiors.

We’ve heard the story before: a trendy city-dwelling couple gets married, has kids, moves to the suburbs to accommodate their new family-oriented lifestyle. And that’s oftentimes where the narrative seems to end. But is that really the end of a family’s design story? For Flora and Brian Kelly, it definitely wasn’t. Two years ago, they purchased a home in Glen Rock, New Jersey, but with their two little ones, Isabel and James, pushing into their pre-teens, space was at a premium.

Their solution? The whole house would undergo an extensive renovation and expansion with the family room growing by several square feet, the kitchen opening up, an addition of a home office, a redesign of the first floor bathroom, and an addition of an ensuite master bathroom. With so many moving parts, Flora knew that she needed an expert to handle the interior design and make sure that the home didn’t end up looking like an “overdone housewives’ home,” in her words. That’s where Homepolish’s Natalie Chianese came in.

Looking to their woodland setting of suburban New Jersey, Natalie decided to introduce some shiplap into the family room and powder room. Beautiful millwork almost became a theme with custom cabinetry and jewel-toned paneling in the formal sitting room. Taking more cues from the great outdoors, the layout of the home remained open and airy, with the dining area flowing right into the family room which then leads to the kitchen. That kitchen, by the way, is a stunner with large slabs of Calacatta marble and quartz running throughout.

The finished space reads as adult and sophisticated, but every once in a while, you’ll catch a little nod to the family-friendly atmosphere. The Mickey Mouse and sports paraphernalia in the office. The kitchen island, perfect for all-hands-on-deck cooking nights. Or even the Chesterfield sofa, which can withstand little feet climbing up on it.

I think I called Natalie at least a once a week. Whether it was agonizing about getting double ovens or going back and forth on the black kitchen pendants… The risks we took are my favorite elements of the home and wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t have a calm voice telling me it would be okay.
