“The feel is disco '70s with a little Hollywood glam... okay, a lot of Hollywood glam.”
When Homepolish designer Michele moved into her new Chelsea apartment, we couldn't wait to see how she would transform this blank canvas. As a printing press turned loft space, the apartment already had incredible bones, but Michele had a plan to warm things up and make the place her own. During the next two months, Michele nipped and tucked, knocked down and built out, truly designing her dream apartment from the ground up.
To create space in the bedroom for both a sleeping and a sitting area, Michele tore down the wall between the bedroom and living area, replacing it with sliding frosted glass doors. Raising the ceiling in the master closet gave her a full 12 feet of storage space—something every New Yorker can appreciate (and envy). Dealing with a not-so-functional master bathroom was no problem for this savvy lady. Adding a drawer to the existing vanity and redesigning the shower doors revamped the space for better usage and storage. Custom build-ins created more storage in the bedroom, living room and hallway. The lighting features Michele installed are incredible. A nearly 1000-pound crystal chandelier glams up the bedroom and a cool, modern fixture jazzes up the living room. "It is part 70s disco and part Hollywood glam," she said. And this aesthetic totally comes through in the accessories. Decorative metallic vases, splashes of turquoise, a little Asian fusion and subtle pirate-inspired touches add a whole lot of character to neutral and glass-based furniture pieces. Michele's favorite items? Her grandfather's Milo Baughman sofa and swivel chairs, which create a chic and cozy living area for entertaining friends or lounging with her pretty kitty, The Captain.
Michele's eclectic style leaves our eyes glittering with delight. "I like infusing different periods and styles, but I am definitely drawn to softer textiles like velvet and silks and sparkly details like crystal, glass and metallics," she said. It's these little elements combined with her incredible vision that make her home highly functional and just downright beautiful. Brava!
